Sunlite Bicycle Beam Seat Post Rear Rack, Quick Release Review

Sunlite Bicycle Beam Seat Post Rear Rack, Quick Release
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My bike does not support racks that have to be attached to the back fork, so regular racks just wouldn't do. This one not only solves that problem, but is also very discreet and very easy to install/remove. The only downside is that if you are really short, like I am, it won't rest fully on the seatpost, and it will jiggle a bit. Folks at the bike store fixed this by putting a piece of hollow metal cylinder around the exposed part of the seatpost to compensate for the difference. Now it is truly PERFECT!!!

Thule 897XT Hullavator Kayak Roof Rack Mount Carrier Review

Thule 897XT Hullavator Kayak Roof Rack Mount Carrier
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've seen many video clips on the net introducing this product (search youTube) so I will skip the functions of it. Lifting my 17' kayak onto my CR-V roof is not something enjoyable, so I bite the bullet. I had to abandoned my factory cross bar and installed the Thule Aero Rapid bars (Thule square and Yakima round will also work but the Aero bar looks much nicer) to accommodate that. This is needed for the load bar to extend 4 to 8 inch beyond the foot, my factory bar will not do that. So after sinking in about $700 I got this going. The installation was not difficult; they even included a DVD with installation instructions. It seems the Hullavator is designed with the square bar in mind. The adaptation to the Aero bars looks like an afterthought. They gave you 4 thin plastic clear films per arm to protect the contact points. A square bar would fit nicely under the mounting bar. But for the Aero bar there were just 4 contact points; I don't even want to tighten the screws too much because of that.
I know before hands that the added height to my CR-V will not clear my garage door; so keep that in mind. The shorter cradle can barely makes it; the bottom taller cradle just simply won't. Now Thule has the Hull-a-port PRO which has a cradle/carrier that will fold, you would think they could have that feature on this $440 product, right? That will sure let me drive my CR-V into my garage without taking it off. The DVD suggest that you take the whole arm assembly off when entering a low clearance garage and states that it is easy.. Ah, it was not that easy, the arms are heavy and putting and removing the pivot pins through the holes can be tricky. I think I will just take the cradles off for now.
Another thing is the Aero bars are nice looking but this Hullavator is not; two big gray boxes without much aero dynamics are sitting on my car roof.. They did pack a lot of mechanisms in there so I guess there is not much room for improvements in that regard. Oh, also be careful not to hit your head, it sticks out just enough to get you. on the other hand it was a good thing that it leave more space on the rack for other things. I moved the front cross bar to in between the front and back doors to avoid it. I can see some other car may not have that choice.
Enough whining I guess the benefits are exceeding the shortcommings so it is a keeper for now.

Topeak MTX Combo Set - MTX EX Trunk Bag with MTX Beam Rack EX Review

Just the right size bag (430ci) for holding whatever I'm bringing for lunch and/or snacks, my cable lock, and other items. It even has an integrated tool drawer in the back for multitools, tire pressure gauges, etc. Since the bag comes with a grab handle and a strap, I can just take the bag when running errands, load it up, then slide it on the rack and go. Don't know how I did without this!

Jandd Extreme Front Rack Black Review

Jandd Extreme Front Rack Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Coming out of the box the rack looked great. The hardware was sewn into a nice little patch, which makes you feel that some thought has gone into the racks.
If I had been planning to mount the rack on my 1981 Specialized Expedition I would have likely given it 5 stars, as it fit that bike very well. attaching to the mid-fork low-rider bosses and the front fender braze-ons. But that was not the bike I bought the rack for.
I had bought it for my 1985 Santana Arriva. And that bike only has fender braze-ons. The first problem was that the fender braze-ons are too close to the fork for the rack. This was pretty easy to solve by putting a standoff (a nut) between the rack and the braze-on. But it then seemed impossible to attach the clamp that Jannd supplied to the rack. The screws were too short. I gave up for a while and thought about just using Blackburn low-riders, but my panniers would not work on those, and I really needed the extra room that a front self would give me, so I went to the hardware store.
With $3.00 worth of U-bolts and another $5.00 worth of nuts, caps and stand-offs I had a solution.
I cut up an old inner tube and put the around the u-bolt (old low-rider rack hardware is what I really needed), and the plate screwed that on. Then I attached the rack to one of the bolts from the u-bolt. Tightening it between a nut and a cap.
It is likely that this was over kill and I might have been able to just use a longer screw and a stand off along with the clamp that Jannd supplied, but it is on and is very sturdy now and I am happy. At least until I have to take it off.
Note: The rack worked perfectly on a 74 day tour of Europe. Having the extra space that the rack gave us was a god send on our tandem.

CycleOps Mag Indoor Bicycle Trainer Review

CycleOps Mag Indoor Bicycle Trainer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
A trainer is better if it closely replicates an actual cycling experience. Hence, the graduating complexity and cost of fan, magnetic and fluid drive trainers. The more you pay, the closer the experience is to replicating the inertia of what happens in a real ride. You want the trainer to feel as if it takes more exertion to get up to speed, but also want it to "coast", when you stop pedaling. This trainer is a mag drive, and does a good overall job, but doesn't coast well. I find myself pedaling all the time, as if I were hill climbing. That's OK for getting exercise, but not good for getting in a sustained ride. Those brief periods of coasting help the muscles recover and allow longer ride time. I could stop entirely for short periods, but that's not how I want to ride. I do use the gears to vary pedaling speed, but can't use the high gear and standing to vary the working muscles enough on the trainer; the resistance doesn't go high enough for that. I haven't tried a fluid drive, so don't know if it would be much better. I suggest trying a trainer somewhere before buying. All said and done, I would probably buy this same trainer again, as it is solidly built and with a smooth tire on the bike, quiet enough. Now, if someone put a 20 lb weight on the spinner...

Jandd Rack Packs Review

Jandd Rack Packs
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've been buying and using JANDD stuff since I worked in a bike shop in 1986/87. And everything I bought back then is still in good shape today, even after 6,000 miles put on my bike during college! Their stuff is bomber right off the shelf. It's very well thought out and constructed. I've got 2 sets of expandable panniers, one of those little triangular thingies that goes inside your frame so you can carry your bike on your shoulder, and this pack. I love them all. This is the basic version of their very popular expandable racktop pack. It holds a super burrito and a soda just fine, and a McDonald's combo just as well. I have it on the bike I keep in my office. It's about the size of a mailbox, padded pretty well, and pretty secure on the rack. Stand back when you open it; the inside is BRIGHT ORANGE! (Keeps your burrito warm!) If you need a padded box to stay on top of your rack, this is the one. I say "box", but it's not rigid; it has plenty of strength not to collapse on your Happy Meal though. It kept my extra large cup of lemonade upright, even after riding off a couple of curbs! Pretty good if you ask me. Of course the lemonade was held in place by a few apples and oranges and a big bag of Dorito's (Nacho Cheese of course!). Just get the pack already, you'll love it!

Delta Axlerodz Bolt On Bicycle Skewers (1 Pair) Review

Delta Axlerodz Bolt On Bicycle Skewers (1 Pair)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The first thing you should be aware of is that the packaging on this product states that you should tighten them to 7 N-m (newton-meters). That is 5.2 pound-feet, or "not very tight."
I did not have access to a torque wrench when I first installed these, so I simply installed them at what seemed like a reasonable tightness (fairly tight). Soon after, my rear wheel shifted during a tough climb, causing it to rub the frame. I tried making the skewers tighter, and this worked with some success, but the rear wheel would still shift from time to time.
Eventually I made it over to a bike shop where the mechanic showed me with a torque wrench what 7 N-m felt like (loose). I tried riding like that just for kicks and sure enough the first time I stood on the pedals the rear wheel shifted again. At this point I decided to tighten them back down, ride home, and put my original quick release skewers back on. No such luck - the Axelrod skewer stripped out with a dull "pop," forcing me to borrow another skewer to get home.
I rate this product "unsafe." They are not tight enough at the rated torque and fail at higher torques.

Topeak MTX Trunk Bag EXP with Side Panniers Review

Topeak MTX Trunk Bag EXP with Side Panniers
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The good: 1) The materials used are good quality and feel like they will hold up under use. 2) The construction is good. It is a well put together bag. 3) The ease of use with the Topeak rack. It fits easily and securily. It is a good system that Topeak has. 4) The top is lightly insulated. Good spot for putting my lunch during the commute.
The bad: 1) The price. There are several less expensive options out there. 2) No exterior easy to reach pockets for phone, wallet, keys etc.. 3)The panniers should be a couple inches wider and taller. The bags are a little undersized.
In the end I would have rated it higher if the bags were just a little larger and if it were just a bit less expensive. Also, I had problems ordering directly from Amazon. The order was filled by Amazon with an expected delivery date of 3-5 business days. Two days after the order was placed I went to track the shipment and it hadn't even picked up yet. It stated that there was a problem getting shipped out. So I had to pay the extra for expedited delivery. That was disappointing. I didn't even get a notice from Amazon that there was a problem.
That was my original review but after 7 months my opinion has changed. I would not give it 3 stars. I am currently on my 2nd bag because I had to return the original after 3 wks. The bag began to come apart at the seems. Now my second bag has the same problem. I only put clothes in there so it's not that I overload it. This is something you might consider if you are using this for your daily commute.

Yakima Big Stack Rack (4041) Review

Yakima Big Stack Rack (4041)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We got the Bigstack to carry two Perception Swifty Kayaks. We used it to take them on vacation from PA to NC.
While some reviews indicated they did not seem very secure, that was not our experience. Our's were mounted on our Toyota Highlander factory roof rack. The strapping system was designed well and if you follow the directions, they are very secure. While the product states you can carry up to 4 kayaks, it would be tight to do so with our roof rack but possible. It definitely would carry 3 Swifties without a problem. Our kayaks are 9 1/2 feet long. A friend just purchased the same system for their Swifty and a 12ft kayak. They are also pleased with the Bigstack.
We also purchased cockpit covers to help with wind resistance which also allowed for storage in the kayak.
The only drawback is getting the kayaks lifted onto the roof, but that is the case with most any system.
I hope this helps you with your decision!

SportRack ABR512 Kayak Saddle Review

SportRack ABR512 Kayak Saddle
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First off, this comes with FOUR saddles as opposed to the picture, which only shows two. Like the other reviewer stated, the hardware is not perfect. The U-bolts take a little elbow grease to fit into their slots, but I did not have any problem with the screw-knobs threading. Each saddle screwed down tightly and securely to my 2002 Ford Escape factory cross bars (I was a little afraid because my bars are about 3-4 inches wide, but it was fine).
I used this to transport a large 13 foot tandem kayak. The included straps are just what you need: two straps with buckles to tie the kayak down to the roof rack, and bow and stern tie downs. I felt very comfortable taking it on the highway.
Overall, I would recommend this product to those looking to save some money compared to Yakima or Thule solutions. These mount great on factory crossbars, and you get everything you need for about half the price of name brand saddles. I did purchase the Thule water slide mat in additionThule 854 Water Slide Kayak Carrier Accessory Mat, and this setup works perfect for me.

Highland 2002500 Universal Rear Mount Bike Carrier Review

Highland 2002500 Universal Rear Mount Bike Carrier
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this bike carrier for my 1971 VW Squareback. While I was able to attach it to my car, I did not feel it was secure enough to stay on with the weight of a bike on it. The clips on the ends of the top straps were not designed well; it seemed like it wouldn't take much to pull the out from the hatch of the car. They should also have had a rubber coating on them. The bottom straps had these huge hooks, which didn't attach well to anything on the car. I also think it needs side straps to really stabilize it. The plastic Michelin Man "padding" was cheesy.
I'm not sure if this is typical for all bike carriers, but I didn't like that I couldn't open my hatch without removing the whole carrier, not just the bike. I transport bike and dogs, and since the car has only 2 front doors, I need to be able to open my hatch to let the dogs out.
Another problem I had was with folding it. It's supposed to be foldable, but it was really difficult for me to pull the cross bars into place without catching my fingers. I sent it back.

Sunlite Bottom Bracket Type Bicycle Display Stand Review

Sunlite Bottom Bracket Type Bicycle Display Stand
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It's made cheaply both material and the workmanship. It's made of relatively soft metal like chrome colored brass. Bright side of this is it's easy to cut, so if the wheel of you bicycle goes way up high, you can cut it lower with a hack saw with relative ease, at least easier than cutting steel. It supports the weight of a bicycle pretty well but you can't sit on the bike while it's on the stand, of course. Even when I cranked the pedal to the full speed, it was stable to reasonable level. It could have been a better design with hollow aluminium(or good quality steel tube) and lighter and I would have happily paid the higher price for it. The bottom line is this. It's not the most refined looking stand but it works for its purpose and I recommend it to anyone who needs a simple portable bike stand for on location repair or adjustment.

RAD Cycle Products Pro Two-Bike Gravity Freestanding Bike Stand Review

RAD Cycle Products Pro Two-Bike Gravity Freestanding Bike Stand
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The bike storage stand is good for the money. The advertising says that you do not need to anchor it to the wall and that is true. How ever the rack can easily become unstable when you storing your bikes and tip over. This has happened on several occassions. After several weeks we have become better at loading the bikes. It does come with a srew that you can use to anchor to the wall but this isnt advisable if you live in an apt. since it would leave a huge hole in the wall. I used it and pulled out. The hooks that hold the bike can easily pop out of the end tubes if you dont lift your bike high enough before removing. Also if you have bar ends on your mountain bike expect them to get caught by the wheels of the top bike. After all is said and done for $39.95. Its a good buy. The more expensive ones dont look any better buildt.

Yakima Megajoe 3-Bike Trunk Rack Review

Yakima Megajoe 3-Bike Trunk Rack
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After searching for quite a while I bought the MegaJoe and am happy. What I wanted? A sturdy trunk rack, holds 3 bikes, allows the trunk to open when installed, and of course good quality.
Setting it up from the box was fairly simple, but i would make one recommendation to Yakima. In the box is a car specific guide to help you install it correctly. For instance, for my Civic, it says how wide I should open the rack. The small problem is that after you have measured this (with your own tape measure...or for me, my foot) you either need to mark how far open you need it, or some other method to make sure you have the right distance between the padded metal ends when you use it again. My recommendation: 1) a sticker that is a ruler that you can stick in your trunk, or 2) make one of the straps have a printed ruler on it, etc, etc, etc...many options that would make this just a bit more consumer friendly.
But, they did think of most of the things that are important. I had an old Graber rack that was missing some intuitive things like little rubber bands to hold down the lose ends of the straps. This has those and makes it easier to shore up when it is in place.
Seems sturdy, held for a long windy freeway drive the other weekend.
