Yakima Sky Box 16 Cargo Box Review

Yakima Sky Box 16 Cargo Box
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was in love with this skybox as it specially fits the Suburu Outback & I travel up & down California a lot for work. I had the top fly off while driving 65mph with people behind - no one was hurt - thankfully. It was potentially deadly. Luckily just humilating picking up ones underwear along the center divide of a major freeway with the CHP standing by. I lost unopened wedding presents, favorite sweaters, you name it. I love & depend on that skybox so much that I wanted to think I had made a mistake. I always pull it closed until the lock swings parrallel on its own. I never force it closed because I was warned it could look latched but not be truly locked. However, both my fiance & i examined the locks. The locks were still in locked position when we looked at the pieces. Horrible. If I wasnt getting married next week I'd have gone on a rampage. Such a shame. Those things are timebombs. I wont even drive behind one anymore.

2008-2010 Subaru Tribeca Roof Rack Crossbars With Locks Review

2008-2010 Subaru Tribeca Roof Rack Crossbars With Locks
Average Reviews:

This roof rack when mounted and tension set on the clamps, the plastic end cover cracked and broke off while another was cracked. The clamping device does not fit the countour of the vehicle top rails. The second fault was the unbearable resonance noise created when the vehicle was moving with no cargo load on the rack.. One would have to remove the rack each time it was not loaded to dampen the wind resonance.
This product was returned to the supplier for credit... which is pending.

BMW Roof Rack Base Support System 338 335 M3 Coupe (2007+) Review

BMW Roof Rack Base Support System 338 335 M3 Coupe (2007+)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Great product, excellent value. Easy to mount. Makes a bit of noise at over 50 mph, which can be quite noticeable with the sun roof screen open, ok when the screen is closed.
I use it to carry my surf board, without any attachments.
My only problem was with the rubber strips that are supposed to slide into the slits. If you go by instructions, you are supposed to start on one end of the bar and push the rubber strip into the opening all the way to the other end. No matter how hard I tried, no matter how much force I applied, I found it impossible to do. The way I finally managed to get the rubber strip in, was by pressing it in from the top and slowly working it in along the whole length. It was a tedious operation, and I probably spent an hour doing it. Not a show stopper, but quite a nuisance. It is possible that this would be easier done in the winter, when rubber contracts and the friction is reduced. I did it in the summer, and it was not fun.
Otherwise, works great, looks ok, definitely recommended.

Excellent product! These are a great option for adding a roof rack system to your vehicle. Installation is fairly easy - for those with a bit of mechanical ability. This is the second set I've installed on my vehicles and have been able to transfer one roof rack system over without having to buy a whole new system.

Thule 665C Transporter Combination Hitch Mount 2011
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This did what I need it to on a 2000+ trip through the mountains. It was solid but did often scrape on driveway entrances/exits. I agree with another reviewer who thought it sat back too far. Also, it doesn't accomodate a hitch lock. Pretty odd; I guess I don't have that much faith in my fellow man. I ended up getting the thickest elongated padlock I could find and used it as my hitch lock. I had no problems. It's a little awkward to fit in but still doable by one person. It's a very good product

Yakima Big PowderHound Snow Roof Rack Review

Yakima Big PowderHound Snow Roof Rack
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Big Powder Hound is a great rack for hauling multiple pairs of ski's or snowboards. Mounting was extremely quick & easy as well as being secure. Construction seems robust enough to last for a long time. I did add the sks locks & they have worked great as well. However I did have 1 lock freeze up on a particularly nasty day, might want to keep a can of spray on ice melter handy to deal with that possible issue.

Yakima FatCat 4-Ski Rooftop Carrier Review

Yakima FatCat 4-Ski Rooftop Carrier
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My fat cat got broken in the highway 70, ruined all the skiis and boards with it last year after using it about 4 months. I liked the design and look on my 4runner but it's not durable to highway speeds with 25 mpg gust winds...

Click Here to see more reviews about: Yakima FatCat 4-Ski Rooftop Carrier

The current trend in skis is just like the necktie trend in the '70s--they just keep getting fatter. That's why Yakima released the four-ski FatCat rooftop carrier, which is wide enough for four pairs of fat skis or two snowboards. The FatCat boasts a low-profile mounting system that works on round bars, square bars, and most factory roof racks right out of the box. The carrier's massive jaws and unique hinge system, meanwhile, hold your skis and boards comfortably and securely.
Thanks to the FatCat's aerodynamic shape, you won't suffer from poor gas mileage on the highway, nor will the carrier make annoying whistling sounds as you drive. Other details include an integrated SkiLift feature that easily clears tall bindings, rubber edging that's gentle on your gear, and SKS compatibility. The FatCat carries a one-year warranty.

Thule Universal FlatTop 6 Rack Review

Thule Universal FlatTop 6 Rack
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My overall impression is that for the price, functionality and ease of installation the Thule 91725 is helluva bargain! I'll probably buy another Thule product because of this purchase.
Description:
Not to offend people or something by stating something that may be obvious to some, but the "Thule 91725 Flat Top" is simply the carrier portion; it doesn't include the carrier base, i.e. you should already have a carrier base installed or you'll have to get one.
The carriers themselves work just like any other carrier with locks and large release buttons. These are wide carriers. So, if you're thinking of getting a couple sets for a mid-size or compact car, it's probably not going fit side by side (e.g. one that opens to the left side and one that opens toward the right side of your vehicle) unless your roof width is wide enough to accomidate or you have extra wide base. The rubber pieces in the carriers to hold your skis/boards in place are teardrop-shaped; the wider end holding the skis or boards in place. Each of the two ski racks comes with 2 clamps and each clamp is composed of two pieces: basically two wide/obtuse-angled "V"-shapes that when joined together with unique hex-screws on each tip, form a diamond shape. The special hex-screw driver is/should be provided with the package.
Considerations:
You'll probably want to account for the clearance between the roof and your ski carrier base's crossbars: assuming your bindings are already installed on your skis and/or board, if you use this carrier, and if your carrier base has only a 3" or less clearance between it and the roof of your vehicle and you place your bidings upside down then your bindings will probably hit the roof top (and probably not fit). In which case, you can always place the bindings up, ski/board base down toward the roof (with a set of skis laid side-by-side), but you won't be able to fit as many skis or snowboards.
Pros:
1. Fairly easy to install (took me about under 10 minutes including alignment): just 8 hex screws for 4 clamps (2 screws per clamp) to mess with.
2. Fairly easy to operate with big white release buttons.
3. "V" shapped clamps will fit just about any crossbar (e.g. eye-shaped, square and/or circular).
4. Comes with locks to secure skis/snowboards onto carrier and hex screws that are unique so it's not very easy to disassemble the clamps without the unique hex screw driver that's provided.
Cons:
1. May not provide enough clearance for some factory-installed base "racks", especially those that are fairly flushed to the roof. Thus, you may not be able to fit as many skis or snowboards.
2. Although the hex screws are unique (you will probably have a difficult time finding these at the local ACE Hardware or something), it is possible the hex screws can be loosened with the proper hex wrench or hex screw driver, i.e. the screws are exposed so even though you lock the carrier there's nothing covering the hex screws as an extra measure to mitigate tampering. Obviosly, if the Hex screws are removed from the carrier base, the entire carrier can be removed...along with your skis or board.
3. I'm not sure, but the teardrop-shape rubber material to keep the skis/snowboard held together in the carrier does not appear to be the type that will last for years, not that it's a big deal, but that's my assessment on it's "durability" and ability to maintain elasticity. I'll find out in 10 years.'08-'10 Subaru Impreza's w/OEM or factory-installed ski/snowboard carrier base:
I'm not sure how this will fit other vehicles, but I can certaily testify to how it fits on a Subie STi. I have a 2008 Subaru Impreza WRX STi and this carrier's clamps fit perfectly onto the eliptical/"eye"-shaped OEM crossbars; I believe the ski base I have is the same OEM item for all '08-'10 Subaru Impreza models (including the WRX and the STi's). So, if you have an '08 or later model Impreza with the OEM ski base, the Thule 91725 is close to perfect. Again, not to offend people or anything, but just make sure the carriers are aligned properly; on the Impreza the passenger/rear portion of the roof is a little narrower than the driver/front portion of the roof. So, if you align it based on the roof line edges, then the carriers will be offset. And when you place the snowboards/skis they'll be skewed instead of parallel to the whole vehicle (if you're concerned about wind drag noise). '08-'10 Subaru Impreza ski and snowboard carrier base OEM part number is E361SFG300 and is a lot cheaper when you order it through an Subaru OEM distributor than from a dealership.
The Impreza's OEM carrier crossbars had enough clearance so I can place a set of skis together (base-to-base) and snowboard upside-down or two snowbaords together (base-to-base) without any part of the bindings (with the exception of the dangling ankle riser on the snowboard) touching the roof top.

Thule Transporter Combination Hitch Cargo Carrier Review

Thule Transporter Combination Hitch Cargo Carrier
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This Thule hitch-mount "hard-shell" cargo carrier I envisioned as just what was needed to double the effective size of my 2007 Toyota Corolla's trunk. It has worked out exactly as expected. It's 13 cu. ft. of space doubles the a little more than 13 cu. ft. space of the trunk.
Everything was in the box (for both 1 1/4" and 2" hitch receivers), shipping was free (and pretty quick) in addition to $40 or so off the list price by buying from Amazon, assembly and installation was a snap (I already had a 1 1/4" receiver mounted on my Corolla along with the flat plug type wiring necessary for the included lights), and it has done just what I needed on a 3000 mile trip in the West in May - haul my camping equipment while still having the car trunk available for everything else I needed.
Only "issue" is just what I expected from putting such a contrapation on the back of my relatively low slung Corolla, i.e., it will occasionally drag when going up or down a sharp incline. However, this is usually quite avoidable by paying attention by going slowly up and down such inclines (like pulling into or out of a gas station or convenience store) and taking such inclines at an angle (i.e., not perpendicular to the street).
A major upside of these type carriers is that one gets less wind drag and better mileage from such this configuration versus the high wind drag of roof mounted carriers. Evidence? I got over 41 mpg on my noted 3000 mile trip! I also does not obstruct the view out the back window at all essentially.

Ha, ha. All jokes aside, I was very pleased with this purchase. Fit with the included mounting hardware on the factory rack on my 2005 Mountaineer. Easy to install, very sturdy. I was worried, because lots of the skis we transport have racing bindings and they are mounted on plates. I thought maybe the bindings would scrape against the roof of the car when the skis were stacked onto it. But this rack gives nice clearance, even when mounted on factory crossbars. Fast Amazon shipping, and off we went to the ski hill.

Thule 724 Flat Top 4-Ski Rooftop Carrier Review

Thule 724 Flat Top 4-Ski Rooftop Carrier
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I found this product to be a good solution for what I needed it to do--Carry my families ski's up to the slopes. There's not a lot of noise from wind aerodynamic issues, even at high speeds. It holds the skis firmly in place, and has a very easy to use open button & close snap. Although it may not be made of metal, it's sturdy enough that nothing moves in it.
This was by far a better option that several other systems I found, which offered too many parts & not a whole lot of value for the price they wanted. The factory installed ski rack which would have cost $300 was roughly the same size and was not as good a deal as this rack for my 2000 Dodge Durango.
In response to the previous two reviews, I must note a few corrections.
Firstly, the rack DOES hold two snowboards, I tested it with two of my friends snowboards on my last trip. In order for them to fit, one must face down and the other face up, one on top of the other. The individual who posted that it does not obviously didn't think to try stacking them.
Second, In response to the fact that the bar could simply be twisted--you're joking right? It would attract attention if an individual attempted to twist off the bar. On top of that, in order for them to twist off the bar, they would have to break the board/skis in the rack in the process, and that would defeat the purpose, would it not?
The only problem I had with this was the FM1 adapter which was required to install this carrier on my factory bars. The instructions for assembly didn't provide any information for any vehicles besides imports. (Domestic cars are out of luck since this is a Sweden based company!)

The Thule 724 Flat Top 4-Ski Rooftop Carrier combines quality construction with great looks, and holds up to four pairs of skis, or two snowboards. The Flat Top installs quickly and easily, but does require the Xadapt2 or the FM1 when used on an Aero bar.
The Thule Flat Top ski carrier has locking hoods with oversized push buttons for easy access while wearing gloves, and is designed to have snowboards carried base-to-base for maximized carrying capacity. This rooftop carrier includes all the hardware needed for mounting to Thule load bars, and is compatible with clamping systems (sold separately) for mounting to factory rack systems. Though the requisite lock cylinders are not included, the Flat Top is compatible with Thule's One-Key System for adding security to your rooftop carrier.

Thule 887 SlipStream Kayak Roof Rack Mount Carrier Review

Thule 887 SlipStream Kayak Roof Rack Mount Carrier
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I looked for a carrier for a rowing shell that would fit my SUV (a bit tall) and would allow me to load the shell singlehanded. Most of the conventional rack systems for rowing shells hold the hull well above the rack crossbars and that makes for difficult single handed loading.
The Slipstream allows for a lower loading height and the combination of the sliding (to the rear) frame and the rear roller make it easy to get the boat started with little chance of hitting the roof with the hull.
My only complaint is that there is no simple locking mechanism for the rack system. Thule suggests using a cable and lock, but I would much prefer locking fasteners such as are available with Yakima and other Thule racks.

The Thule 825 Port Side Kayak Roof Rack Mount Carrier is designed to allow you to transport your kayak on the roof of your car. It uses an adjustable roller and sliding base system to load the kayak, which eliminates contact between the kayak and your vehicle. For maximum stability while driving, the carrier secures the kayak in place with saddles at the fore and aft, which allows the kayak to be positioned at the strongest section regardless of the base rack system's location. It fits the Thule square, Aero, and Yakima bars and also fits most factory-installed racks, increasing its versatility. This product is protected by Thule's limited lifetime warranty.

Thule Truck Rack Adapter Kit Review

Thule Truck Rack Adapter Kit

This was the product I needed, and it works perfectly. My only complaint is why in the world should I have to buy an extra part that I could only find online. I will admit my choice of rack system was based only on looks. I got the higher end aero bars which are oval instead of square or round. When it was time to get a bike rack, I obviously picked the one that fit the look I had going, which also happened to be the higher end model, echelon. Come to find out, the expensive rack can't actually fit on the expensive bars without this kit. Come on Thule!
