Yakima Sky Box 16 Cargo Box Review

Yakima Sky Box 16 Cargo Box
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was in love with this skybox as it specially fits the Suburu Outback & I travel up & down California a lot for work. I had the top fly off while driving 65mph with people behind - no one was hurt - thankfully. It was potentially deadly. Luckily just humilating picking up ones underwear along the center divide of a major freeway with the CHP standing by. I lost unopened wedding presents, favorite sweaters, you name it. I love & depend on that skybox so much that I wanted to think I had made a mistake. I always pull it closed until the lock swings parrallel on its own. I never force it closed because I was warned it could look latched but not be truly locked. However, both my fiance & i examined the locks. The locks were still in locked position when we looked at the pieces. Horrible. If I wasnt getting married next week I'd have gone on a rampage. Such a shame. Those things are timebombs. I wont even drive behind one anymore.

BMW Roof Rack Base Support System 338 335 M3 Coupe (2007+) Review

BMW Roof Rack Base Support System 338 335 M3 Coupe (2007+)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Great product, excellent value. Easy to mount. Makes a bit of noise at over 50 mph, which can be quite noticeable with the sun roof screen open, ok when the screen is closed.
I use it to carry my surf board, without any attachments.
My only problem was with the rubber strips that are supposed to slide into the slits. If you go by instructions, you are supposed to start on one end of the bar and push the rubber strip into the opening all the way to the other end. No matter how hard I tried, no matter how much force I applied, I found it impossible to do. The way I finally managed to get the rubber strip in, was by pressing it in from the top and slowly working it in along the whole length. It was a tedious operation, and I probably spent an hour doing it. Not a show stopper, but quite a nuisance. It is possible that this would be easier done in the winter, when rubber contracts and the friction is reduced. I did it in the summer, and it was not fun.
Otherwise, works great, looks ok, definitely recommended.

Thule 665C Transporter Combination Hitch Mount 2011 Review

Thule 665C Transporter Combination Hitch Mount 2011
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This did what I need it to on a 2000+ trip through the mountains. It was solid but did often scrape on driveway entrances/exits. I agree with another reviewer who thought it sat back too far. Also, it doesn't accomodate a hitch lock. Pretty odd; I guess I don't have that much faith in my fellow man. I ended up getting the thickest elongated padlock I could find and used it as my hitch lock. I had no problems. It's a little awkward to fit in but still doable by one person. It's a very good product

1998- 2010 Honda Odyssey Roof Rack Crossbars With Locks Review

1998- 2010 Honda Odyssey Roof Rack Crossbars With Locks
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Pros: Cheep, holds the weight.
Cons: Poorly constructed, locking covers fall apart, loud wind noise when not loaded.
Recommendation: only for rare uses. If you'll be frequently using this rack, spend the money on a better make and model.
I bought this rack for my 2007 Honda Odyssey to carry our 14.5 foot canoe. The box arrived damaged, and there were no instructions in the box. The shipper apologised for the lack of instructions and send me a link to an online video.
The first time I used this it was very frustrating. The initial set up involves adjusting several screws to get the clamps to seat correctly. The locking clamp covers are cheeply made and are very difficult to seat and lock once the clamps are in place. The second time I used the rack, one of the locking covers completely fell apart. The tumbler dropped all of its pieces and fell out of the cover. So after only two uses, I'm already down to three of four locking covers.
When not loaded, this rack has a loud hum from air moving across the top, even at city speeds. This may be common on removable racks, but the built in roof rack on our previous 1995 Mercury Villager did not have any audible wind noise.
Though I am disappointed in the usability of this product, I will only be using this rack a few times a year, so I'll work around the cheep construction. It does hold the canoe, though by the time I've installed the rack I'm pretty near my frustration threshold. If you will rarely use a roof rack, this may be a workable solution. If you are going to use it more than a few times a year, spend the money and get a better rack. You'll thank yourself later.

Yakima RocketBox 16 Rooftop Cargo Box Review

Yakima RocketBox 16 Rooftop Cargo Box
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Just bought the Yakima RocketBox at a great price from Amazon. Shipped promptly (free shipping) and packed well. The product is very well engineered, easy to install, light weight, capacious with an excellent locking system. Just went on a 1000 mile trip with it and would recommend it for anyone looking for such a product.

It's Yakima's most popular rooftop cargo box ever, and for good reason. That's because the RocketBox 16 offers plenty of cargo space for skis, paddles, and even jousting poles. The RocketBox 16 measures 92 by 15 by 26 inches (W x H x D), with a total storage area of 16 cubic feet. That's enough for a weekend's worth of gear for three or more people, or enough skis and boards for a carload of ski bums and snow bunnies. In fact, the long and lean design means there isn't much you can't carry. More significantly, the RocketBox 16 fits on round, square, and most factory crossbars, and includes quick-installation hardware and SKS locks. Outfitted with an old-school matte black finish, the RocketBox 16 carries a limited lifetime warranty.

Thule Transporter Combination Hitch Cargo Carrier Review

Thule Transporter Combination Hitch Cargo Carrier
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This Thule hitch-mount "hard-shell" cargo carrier I envisioned as just what was needed to double the effective size of my 2007 Toyota Corolla's trunk. It has worked out exactly as expected. It's 13 cu. ft. of space doubles the a little more than 13 cu. ft. space of the trunk.
Everything was in the box (for both 1 1/4" and 2" hitch receivers), shipping was free (and pretty quick) in addition to $40 or so off the list price by buying from Amazon, assembly and installation was a snap (I already had a 1 1/4" receiver mounted on my Corolla along with the flat plug type wiring necessary for the included lights), and it has done just what I needed on a 3000 mile trip in the West in May - haul my camping equipment while still having the car trunk available for everything else I needed.
Only "issue" is just what I expected from putting such a contrapation on the back of my relatively low slung Corolla, i.e., it will occasionally drag when going up or down a sharp incline. However, this is usually quite avoidable by paying attention by going slowly up and down such inclines (like pulling into or out of a gas station or convenience store) and taking such inclines at an angle (i.e., not perpendicular to the street).
A major upside of these type carriers is that one gets less wind drag and better mileage from such this configuration versus the high wind drag of roof mounted carriers. Evidence? I got over 41 mpg on my noted 3000 mile trip! I also does not obstruct the view out the back window at all essentially.

SportRack A90275 Aero XL Roof Box Review

SportRack A90275 Aero XL Roof Box
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Was very easy to mount on the Sequoia, and feels pretty sturdy (and watertight). Absolutely no wind noise or rattling could be heard inside the vehicle at 75 MPH. I bought it because the width and height makes it better for carrying family stuff than comparable size Thule or Yakima boxes, though it's not long enough for skis. Low price is a huge bonus. I also like that it opens from the back instead of the side, since on my tall vehicle the easiest way to reach the box is standing on the rear bumper. I looked at the big name boxes, and I can't see how they are worth 2.5x as much.
**UPDATE** Have now taken on a few long trips. It did not seem to affect gas mileage at all, and stayed dry inside through 300 miles of downpour. I have to take it off to fit in the garage, which would be true of any box, but I can get it on or off in less than 10 minutes. I fit 2 carry-on suitcases, 4 sleeping bags, a stroller, a full-frame baby backpack, and a small baby bouncer seat inside.

The ABS single-shell construction, meanwhile, is durable and long lasting, helping it hold up to bumps in the road, swipes from branches, and general tough handling. Thule 571 Roof Mount Cargo Box Storage Lift Review

Thule 571 Roof Mount Cargo Box Storage Lift
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This works like it's supposed to. Holds my 1800 without issue. A few notes though:
1) Get your own mounting screws, the stuff that comes with it is junk
2) I ended up putting up 1x4 supports and mounting everything to those. I didn't put the middle support in, and it doesn't seem to matter.
3) My ceiling is is just over 10' tall, and this only comes down to about eye-level for me (I'm 6' tall). It's enough for me, but you might consider getting a longer rope.
