Yakima Rack and Roll Trailer Review

Yakima Rack and Roll Trailer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My sister and I went together on this. We do a lot of traveling to dog agility trials, and since she bought a Toyota Highlander Hybrid, the roof is just too high to safely load much in a cargo box. I have fairly long arms, but the first time I tried to load a cargo box on the Highlander it was ridiculous. Soon after she bought the car, she told me she was thinking about buying this trailer. I thought she was nuts to consider spending over 2 grand to haul the cargo box.
The first time I used this thing, I was sold! The trailer is so light it's simple to unhook it and pull it where you need it.

Wald 582 Folding Rear Bicycle Grocery Basket Review

Wald 582 Folding Rear Bicycle Grocery Basket
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
These baskets are great. I have tried more expensive and lighter weight grocery panniers, but those don't hold as much weight or volume, and they are a pain because you have to take them into the store with you to avoid having them stolen off the bike. I use zip ties to attach the Wald baskets to my bike, because with the included hardware they tend to rattle. I carry a lot of groceries with these, including heavy things like beer, potatoes, and flour. I find they work best with paper grocery bags, but they also work quite well with reusable cloth grocery bags.
They do weigh quite a bit, though. 5.5 pounds may not sound like much but if you have to carry the bike up any stairs you might want to think about whether you'll be able to manage the weight. I use a steel Wald rack for mounting these, and that also adds a bit to the weight.

UNIVERSAL 4 Bike T-RaxPRO Hitch Review

UNIVERSAL 4 Bike T-RaxPRO Hitch
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was generally disappointed with this rack and returned it. It wasn't a terrible rack, but it wasn't great either, and I wanted something solid.
1. One thing I liked about the rack was the ability to move the mounts for each of the 4 bikes forward and back. Unfortunately, these mounts do not have the grip to stay in place. When I had 1 bike mounted closest to the car, after taking it for a ride my bike ended up halfway back on the rack and at about a 25 degree angle - it wasn't parallel with the back of the rack any more. I was *not* concerned about the bikes coming off the rack because the end of each rack arm there's a stopper thing bolted on (the bright yellow piece), but I didn't like the bike's position jumping around like that when it was on the rack.
2. I imagine that for the same reasons, if you put more than one bike on the rack they would end up squished and banging against each other by the end of the ride.
3. If you place a single bike on the very back mount, it doesn't slide around like that. But it does bounce up and down quite a bit. When it's on the mount closest to the car it doesn't bounce much if at all, but when it's on the back mount there's definitely bounce when you go over a bump. I will say that this version of the rack with the screw-in hitch pin was less bouncy than the previous "Hassle Free Hitch" version which I was able to try from a local bike shop.
4. The cable lock is just a short span of cable that locks the outermost bike on the rack - it is simply impossible for you to mount a single bike closest to the car and use the lock. This isn't so bad if you have a bike mounted on the outermost mount because it blocks any of the other bikes from being taken off, but I was surprised.
5. Assembling the rack requires several additional tools not included with the rack - according to the installation video (I don't recall the sizes offhand so I checked) you need -
A. A 3/4th inch wrench.
B. A 2nd 3/4th inch wrench. Though the 2nd one is just used to hold the nut on one side, so I was able to use one of those adjustable wrenches that I had.
C. And one 9/16 inch wrench.
Regarding the 3/4th wrench, it's used both for securing one of the bolts that holds the rack together and for the hitch bolt. On my hitch I actually needed one of those "clicky" wrenches because a regular wrench was to big to fit in the space I had around the hitch. Couldn't use the adjustable wrench either, for the same reasons, so you'll probably need to buy a new tool.
6. Security-wise, the only thing that attaches to the rack part of the rack to the hitch part of the rack is a standard bolt, so someone could steal most of the rack and all the bikes with a simple wrench, even with the locking hitch pin. The good news is that there's no reason to be able to remove these bolts, so if you wanted the rack to be more secure you could always tighten or weld them, I believe. (Though if you were leaving bikes on the rack in that case I would suggest a sturdy lock than a cable lock).
7. I had a strap-on rack before this rack (Saris Bones), and once you strapped it on it was rock solid. This rack was never rock solid - as I mentioned, with a bike on the back it bounced noticeably. Unfortunately, after doing a bunch of reading it appears all racks are like this.
8. Changing the position of the arms of the rack to point down so they didn't stick out while the bikes were on required removing then reinserting a pin, and reinserting the pin was a little bit fussy. Thule racks have a thing you just press down to the do the same thing. Now the pin is more steady and doesn't have a little bit of flop like the Thule mechanism did...but since the rack jumped around a bit anyways, I'm not sure it ended up mattering.
9. I didn't have a chance to try it, but it definitely would have been a tight fit to fit 4 bikes on it.
10. I had thought it would be faster to put on than my "strap to the car" rack. However, it requires a tool to do it (the older hassle free hitch version doesn't, but bounces around a little more) and takes some time and some fiddling - getting the pin through the hitch was annoying sometimes. I don't mean that this is any different than any other hitch mounted racks, but I was disappointed. And unlike the strap racks, you would need a fairly large trunk to leave it in your trunk (of course you could also just leave it attached to the hitch all the time).
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Things I did like about the rack -
1. Though the mounts might move around a bit, the clicky straps that hold the bike to the mounts were very secure and I wasn't worried at all that the bike would come off them. At not point was I concerned at all that the bikes might come off the rack.
2. It wasn't terribly heavy like the Thule racks seemed to be.
3. Saris customer service actually had a phone number, answered their phone, and could answer questions about the racks - they didn't give me any "blow smoke up your arse" answers are either, which was great.
4. Like most hitch racks, I was able to get into the trunk/hatch with the rack on and bikes on the rack.
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Some of my complaints are specific to the Saris rack, and some of them aren't, but overall I had thought a hitch rack would be better than the "attach with straps" kind of rack, and was rather disappointed.

Topeak MTX Trunk Bag DX Review

Topeak MTX Trunk Bag DX
Average Reviews:

The quality and price on this bag are unbeatable. It attaches to the bike easily and fits securely. But be careful of one thing when ordering: This bag is very deep. Make sure you have adequate clearance between the rack and your seat to accommodate it. I have to raise the seat slightly higher than optimum to fit mine under the rails without crimping the edge of the bag. If you find you don't have the room, go for one of the Topeak bags with the sloping profile.

Schwinn 140 Upright Exercise Bike Review

Schwinn 140 Upright Exercise Bike
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I did a lot of online research before purchasing this bike. I was looking for a bike that was built well, quiet, decent electronics, and good value. This Schwinn 140 is exactly what I was looking for. Shipping was very quick for this item. Amazon told me it shipped on a Friday, and it arrived at my house the following Tuesday.
Unpacking the box was relatively easy. It looked like a lot of parts at first, but there weren't that many steps required to put this bike together. I was able to assemble this bike in about an hour, by myself. The instructions were clear, although installing the handle bars was a little tricky.
Once the bike was assembled I spent about 15 minutes making adjustments for my riding height and style. This bike has many adjustments, so take your time getting it right. I'll probably make more adjustments after my first full week of workouts.
I really like the electronics. The display looks high-end. It's bright, easy to read, the colors are nice. I had one issue when I first powered up the bike, after 2 minutes I got an "E3" error. But after resetting the display, it was fine, and I haven't seen it since. Hopefully that's not a portent of things to come. But so far so good.
I'm 6', and weigh 240 pounds (that's why I bought an exercise bike). This bike feels very sturdy for my size and weight. No loose parts, or creaking noises. At least not yet.
I will be posting pictures to Amazon shortly.

Thule Hull-a-Port Pro Folding Kayak Carrier Review

Thule Hull-a-Port Pro Folding Kayak Carrier
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I picked up this rack recently because I had to transport my 15' kayak on a highway at 70 mph for a couple of hours. Rack easily bolted to my existing factory crossbars on a 2005 Subaru Outback. The shape of the mounting blocks are made to adapt to nearly any factory, Thule or Yakima Cross Bars as far as I can tell. Once bolted on they feel very secure and I had no issues on my 4 hour trip there and back.
The fold down feature of the PRO was worth the price increase to me especially if you are planning on mounting on an SUV that has to fit in a garage. It has a large handle that you simply pull up and it allows the J bar to rotate up and down and lock in both positions. The other bonus is having the bow and stern racheting tie downs included. These are excellent and make it very quick and completely stable.
The only thing I need to get now is some locks to ensure that this great new rack doesn't walk away since it is just 8 wing nuts holding them on. The price is high but there is enough solid engineering between the rack itself and the accessories included to definately recommend this rack.

Basil Preston Shopper Bag (Anthracite) Review

Basil Preston Shopper Bag (Anthracite)

Love this pannier (I have it in green, which isn't available at the moment) - and get complimented on it all the time. Having a pannier that I could easily remove and use as a shopping and/or school bag was important to me, and this one fits the bill. It's solidly constructed, well-designed and very roomy (fits a bunch of groceries or several books/binders with ease, and the handles are long enough to fit, albeit snugly, over my shoulder). Reflective panels are an added safety bonus. I only use one on one side and have found that to be sufficient so far as I typically carry a purse or messenger bag separately. I don't know yet how water-resistant it is; it's not sealed at the top front/back so it may require a rain cover, which unfortunately isn't included.

I bought one of these racks at a bike store, loaded it with 29 pounds of gear (it is rated for 55) and went biking in Scotland.
The sided bent in damaging my spokes twice causing me to get the wheel trued.
The sides snapped off from the top after 322 miles. The tubing is
hollow aluminum. It simply is not tough enough for the task.

Axiom Catskill Seat Bag Review

Axiom Catskill Seat Bag
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The bag is attractively designed and appears to be well made. Large zipper stubs make it easy to open and close. Being a non-technical person, I didn't realize that 201 ci is really compact. Practically, you can hold only small items (car keys, tire lever, allen wrenches, pocket change, I.D. card and MAYBE a spare inner-tube in the Axiom Catskill. And you have to expand the bag to get the full 201 ci. available space. Ergo, you can't place a frame pump in the bag, as I was hoping to since my dual-suspension MTB has problematic angles and tubes. But if you need more space expend additional cash for a bigger bag.
This bag may deserve more stars. I'll update after a full trial run.

Cateye TL-LD500-R LED Bicycle Tail and Safety Light (Red) Review

Cateye TL-LD500-R LED Bicycle Tail and Safety Light (Red)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I really wanted a tail light that I wouldn't have to screw around with taking it on and off the bike when I left the bike locked up somewhere. This was the only light (didn't buy it through amazon, but same model number on the box - TL-LD500-R) I could find, having visited 3 different bike shops, that would attach directly to the back of my bike rack - in my case a Topeak Explorer bike rack.
I found other lights that had a quick release system that would let you attach the light to the bike rack, but this was the only one that attached directly an wasn't easy to take off. Assuming your rack has a (for lack of a better term) hangy down thing to attach something to in the back, you just take the screw, screw it through the hole, and into the body of this tail light.
1. You don't have to unscrew it to change the batteries, you use a coin to pop it open to change the batteries. I suppose someone could pop it open and steal the batteries if they wanted, but I don't leave my bike in *that* sketchy of areas.
2. It's not impossible to get the light off again if you have a screw driver or the right wrench, but it takes some work - enough work for me to not worry about someone stealing it because they walked by and thought "hey, I could use one of those!"
3. Because it's bolted directly on, you don't have to worry about the light flying off when you hit a bump or something (which I've had other tail light do).
My only complaint is I wish it had more than 2 modes (steady on, or blinky).
EDIT: I wanted to add that one thing I'm not fond of on this light is the blinky mode - the light just isn't on long enough in blinky mode. I can imagine someone glancing over at just the wrong time and completely missing seeing the light on. It might be on, at most, half the time. I greatly prefer the blinky mode of the Planet Bike Rack Blinky - it's actually on like 90% of the time, but turns off just long enough to be attention getting.
I run them side by side (the cateye on steady, the planet bike one on blinky mode) so it's cool for my setup. And the planet bike rack blinky slides into a mount, so unfortunately it doesn't attach directly to the rack like the cateye light does. But I would prefer the Planet Bike Rack Blinky blink mode - it's easier to see.

This three red-LED tail light offers a constant mode and flashing mode. Powered by two AAA batteries, the light offers up to 100 hours of run time in flashing mode and 50 hours in constant mode. It mounts easily to any seat post or handlebar. A clothing clip is also included.
About Cateye Founded in 1946 in Osaka, Japan, CatEye is the leading manufacturer of cycle computers, lights, and reflectors to cyclists in the world. In 1964, CatEye was the first in the industry to create a flashing lamp for bicycles, followed by their first battery headlamp in 1982, and the very first bicycle head lamp using white LEDs in 2001. The company's Opticube lens and reflectors make the brightest and most efficient LED headlights. while their LD500 remains the only rear safety light that can meet the rigorous CPSC standards for reflectivity.

Topeak RX Trunk Bag EX with Side Panniers

I purchased this trunk bag with the knowledge that it would be primarily used for on the trail storage and it's a good thing I did! The inner portion is basically a long padded camera case without much room for anything else. I put the majority of my tools, locks and lunch in the side panniers which expand out quite nicely. I haven't had it very long but the stitching and build don't have any red flags at the moment. I was initially enamored with these panniers until one day they spontaneously self-destructed (it was a heavy load, but not unreasonable). They tore along the seam of one of the top zippers and my groceries came pouring out onto the pavement like they'd been violently eviscerated. The seller wasn't amenable to restitution, and so I'm displeased enough to write this scathing review.

Eleven81 ATB Alloy Rear Mount Bicycle Rack - Black - RACK1005
Average Reviews:

I chose this specific rack because I also purchased the Eleven81 Rear mounted basket, so it was important that they were compatible. It is a great inexpensive rack. The only downside is that it does not come with ANY instructions, pictures, any directions whatsoever on how to install it. Going to their website proved just as unsuccessful, so we googled "how to install a rear mounted bike rack" and came across a series of videos that show you how to do it very easily. Failure to provide instructions is the only reason it did not get 5 stars, otherwise I consider it is a great product. Have been using it already for about 4 months to carry around the basket with groceries.
