(More customer reviews)Just got back from 2 day bike trip & this box worked out great as a trunk. I carried food & 2 water bottles that don't leak of course. I carred two apples, a pound bag of carrots, a bag of carmel corn, the water, small camera, rain jacket which kept everything from jumping around. The last day I lost half those contents on the ground and didn't realize until others noticed what happened. OOPS! Not box fault mine. I have a bad leg & have to dip bike all the way over to step my foot to other side these days. And I hadn't clipped the box shut.
I suspect the plastic could fail in a crash and definitely would scuff. Top got scuffed up when we attached the release plate to the bottom. A towel placed on ground or table before hand would prevent this.
The silly keys I'll never use. Really what good is the key/lock system when anyone could just remove & walk away with the entire quick release box? Meantime it held a decent amount of stuff for a day trip & did well on a fairly rough trail. Hiawatha Railbed converted Bike Path look it up on Google:))) Coming down is the bone shaking part. We enjoy the bottom up approach then get to coast back down instead of the more popular top down then shuttle bus back to top. Put box through some stress and held up well.
Box is light weight yet study. I will make a cushioned liner with 3/8" closed cell foam so that fruit among other things don't shake around so much. Also I'm thinking a bag with a pull cord closure might help with that too and less likely to spill contents again. Still should be able to slip a rain jacket or pants inside on top of everything. Some helmets might be too high to fit inside or too long. Mine would fit but I wouldn't do that. I wish it had a full flattened end on back narrow side so that I could set it up for both storage & when I need to carry it. As is the hinge prevents that from being steady on it's end. Husband has soft side competition of this trunk & likes it alot. We share in what we carry on rides together. All in all we thought it handled well & held up fine. The bigger boxes that this is cousin to are too large for bicycles in general. We have folding full size bikes so need the quick release trunks and handlebar bags so we can slip the bikes into their carry/storage bags for transporting.
I think it's a personal choice as to if you prefer the soft bags or this hard trunk or even the inbetween harder soft bags out there. Husband is thinking he'll cut the lock out and plug the hole. I'm thinking how to make a shoulder sling for it. And make one for his soft bag that didn't come with one not even a handly handle like this XLC Cargo Box has. Oh yeah color beige can't be beat. And I could put one of those small cargo nets across the top and sides over it to hold any clothing overflow if it was needed...so carried the net inside too but never used on this trip.
UPdate a year later. Still like this trunk. Use it all the time and though it can rattle with contents inside a thin foam insert sheet slit on the corners to fit nicely into the bottom and sides of this box do a lot to help with the noise. Also usually just throw in a light rain jacket which helps most of all I think to prevent items from jangling around. Have had no problems and no breakage on this box in a years use. My only wish for it still is to be able to be set on it's side or backside so it's foot print when you remove it from bike and or carry it in travel off the bike is smaller. I'm amazed at how much really we can put inside this gem.
