(More customer reviews)When I went looking for a ski/snowboard rack, this one stood out because of its function and price. Quite a bit cheaper than some of the others available even here on Amazon, it looked like it had just about all the same features--locked access and a decent amount of clamping area for up to 4 snowboards (2 side by side stacked = 4). Since some of my friends ski, I didn't want a dedicated snowboard-type rack.
I have a 2008 Subaru Outback Sport, which comes with crossbars. I've never put them on, but since learning and improving my snowboarding technique over the past year, I decided to make more room in the car for friends joining me on the trek up.
One thing that was not clear is that if the crossbars are >1" thick/tall, the clamps on the rack won't quite fit all the way around. Turns out mine are just over 1", and the clamps looked lopsided if I forced them on. There's a special extension kit sold separately, unfortunately, which was a bummer.
BUT, save yourself the trouble! All you need are longer bolts. The bolts are 6mm metric hex bolt caps. I went to a hardware store and ended up buying 4 6mm x 60mm and 4 6mm x 80mm hex bolts. Swapped them out, no problems. The long bolts it comes with are fully threaded along the entire length, which I could not find in the longer sizes. But since only the ends are important, you won't need that.
If you have completely round crossbars, there's a separate kit you have to buy. In which case, this might not be the rack for you.
The attachment instructions are really simple and it might take 10-15 minutes the first time to put the rack on. Probably
