You would think finding a rear Rack for a bike would be easy, however according to many riders, it's a challenge. The simple fact is not all Racks fit all Bikes. It took me hours of research before I found what may be the only rack that would fit on my 2011 Cannondale.
That being said, I found a company in Canada who has made it their mission to design and manufacture Racks, some of which, will accommodate "95% of all bikes". I was sorry I couldn't find a Rack manufactured here in the US, however that is a discussion for another day.
When I started my search I had a list of requirements which I am sure mirror many of yours. I wanted a lightweight rack that set back on my bike so my Trunk Bag would not interfere with my seat. I also wanted it to set back so my Panniers, when installed, would not interfere with my peddling. Among other items on my "wish list" was a place to install a rear reflector, alloy construction, and the ability to install the rack without watching a two hour instructional DVD.
Thankfully, the nice people at "Toba" design a handful of racks, with an assortment of ways to attach them securely. Their website is a bit confusing as the pictures and specs don't always match. In their defense, they are working on this.
The Robin, which I am reviewing, may not be the "perfect rack" but it's as close to perfect as I am going to find for my bike.
There are two ways in which the Robin can be fitted to your bike. It should be noted you will only need one of these two options. The first is with what is they refer to as a "T -Track". This single adjustable rail slides from under the rack and extends and attaches to the frame of the bike. That is of course depending upon whether or not your bike has a predrilled hole in just the right spot. It should be noted, this piece of steel is not forgiving and is extremely difficult to bend. It may give you trouble if it doesn't "fit as is". (I suggested they consider offering an aluminum rail replacement option which can be adjusted accordingly.) The "T-Track" allows you to accomplish something that is difficult with other Racks, and that is to level the rack in the exact position you prefer. (Some like their Rack perfectly level while other riders opt to have it lean forward a few degrees.)
The second option for attaching the Rack is with two adjustable arms, called "T-Bars". These bars can be fashioned to your rear Brake Mount, or Frame, depending on your bike. I am not an advocate of attaching anything to the brake apparatus; however in my case I had no choice. These self leveling arms will allow you to level the rack perfectly, much like with the "T-Track". With my situation I had to cut both arms as they were actually too long for my bike. You may not need to cut these arms for your bike.
The Pros: The Rack is sturdy, light, and very easy on the eyes. It's available in black and anodized silver. It's made of alloy. There are even pre-drilled holes to accommodate a fender if you so desire. It rests at a perfect height above my hybrid tires. When ordering the "Robin" you will not only receive both fastening devices, (T-Track and T-Bars), but all the necessary hardware, even the little doo-hickeys that allow you to fashion it to the brake mount. Mounting Instructions could always be clearer and cleaner, however I am confident you will find installation relatively easy.
The Cons: The way the deck is designed it will not accommodate some Trunk Bags and/or Panniers, however that is something you can usually find a "work around". The Rack could be an inch or so longer, but that is just my opinion. The price of $50. may be a bit high for some, however, I have no doubt you will be pleased with your purchase. It should be noted, if you think you can attach the Rack with the "T-Track" system then you won't need the "T-Bars" system. This means you can order the Rack without the "bars" and save a little. I believe the Rack without the "T-Bars" is called the "Reid". (I know, I know, can life be any more confusing??)
It should be noted "Toba" makes a few other racks. You may want to check out their other options. You can check out their video on Youtube. The video does not make it clear you only need to choose one of the suggested attachment options, however it will give you a basic understanding of how their Racks work.
You may not purchase Toba racks directly from the company. I purchased my Rack from Mybikepro.com.
Thanks for your time. I hope this has helped. I would happy to answer any questions.
Remember, Enjoy the Ride ... it goes by fast.
