I've been really impressed with this.
I was attracted by the price with the "rat trap" being an added gimicky bonus.
I almost believe the other review that says the "rat trap" like spring makes bungee cords optional.
My usual load is a book bag sized backpack with a laptop and a few other odds & ends in it. I put the loop from the top of the backpack around the pointy "horn" of the bike seat and rest the bag on the rack underneath the spring loaded "rat trap". Since I'm carrying a laptop, I certainly use a bungee. But I used to use 2-3 bungees and I feel like its even more secure with this setup.
Thanks guys! I'll hopefully be enjoying this for a long, long while!

Update: the rack failed yesterday. One of the "legs" snapped less than an inch about where it bolts to the frame. It's no the beginning of Sep 2009 and I've been using the rack several days a week since I got it in May 2009. When it failed it had only a pannier bag on one side of it holding only a laptop. There's probably a weight limit on it and I've surely went over the limit plenty of times though it wasn't carrying much weight when it broke. Also, it didn't attach properly to my bike near the seat - my frame has a hole in the center of a tube below my seat. This rack had holes on each side. Clearly the rack was designed to mount differently. I made it work by using some bendy strips of metal, but there was a good bit of flex to it. That plus the swaying of the pannier bag is probably what weakened and eventually broke the leg.
I'll be buying a sturdier from the a local bike shop today, but I know I'll miss the "rat trap" feature of this one!
